PUBLIC DUTY

Ethics and conflicts

The newsroom’s first obligation is to readers and the truthful public record.

Editorial independence

Advertisers, sponsors, technology providers, data vendors, and source platforms do not receive approval rights over independent coverage. Commercial relationships are not allowed to determine conclusions, suppress relevant facts, or purchase favorable treatment.

Conflicts of interest

Editors and contributors should disclose financial, professional, family, political, or personal relationships that could reasonably affect—or appear to affect—the work. The newsroom may add a disclosure, assign another reviewer, narrow the contributor’s role, or decline the assignment.

Gifts, travel, and access

Material gifts are not accepted in exchange for coverage. When access, travel, products, tickets, or services are supplied by a subject or sponsor, that support is disclosed when relevant to the reader’s assessment of the work.

Fairness and minimizing harm

Public interest is not the same as public curiosity. Coverage considers the vulnerability of victims, children, private individuals, and people exposed to retaliation. Graphic, identifying, or private information is included only when its journalistic value outweighs foreseeable harm.

Anonymous sources

Anonymity is granted for a clear reason—not convenience—and the source’s identity must be known to an accountable editor. Readers are given as much context as safety allows about the source’s access, motivation, and limitations. Anonymous opinion alone is rarely sufficient.

Manipulated and synthetic media

Images, audio, and video are assessed for provenance, date, location, editing, and synthetic alteration. Unverified material is not presented as authentic. Illustrations and generated media are labeled when their nature would not otherwise be obvious.

Plagiarism and attribution

ClariCurrent does not copy reporting, conceal reliance on another publisher, or reproduce protected expression beyond legitimate quotation and commentary. Ideas, facts, images, and original reporting receive attribution appropriate to their contribution.
