Meta has announced the VR Start Developer Competition, backed by a $1 million prize pool, to accelerate software development for its upcoming hardware (Road to VR). Open from September 24 to November 18, 2026, the contest requires entries to be fully usable with hands end-to-end, treating controller support as optional (Mixed-News). The initiative is designed to populate the application library for the Meta VR Glasses, which are scheduled to ship in spring 2027 priced at $1,299.99 (VR.org).
Competition Structure and Hardware Specifications
The competition features 20 cash prizes ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 distributed across three distinct categories: Entertainment, Gaming, and Productivity (Road to VR). To qualify, entries must adhere to seated, stationary designs with a duration of 10 minutes or less (Mixed-News). Participants are also required to hold Meta VR Start program membership to enter the competition (VR.org).
The hardware these applications target represents a departure from traditional setups by omitting built-in controllers entirely (Gizmodo). Weighing approximately 100 grams, the Meta VR Glasses rely instead on hand, eye, and voice tracking for user input (LBC). While Touch Plus controllers can be purchased separately, most customers are expected to operate the device without them (VR.org).
Because the upcoming headset runs the same operating system as the Quest 3, developers can utilize existing hardware for prototyping (Road to VR). Creators can build and test their submissions using the Quest 3, the Meta XR Simulator, the Meta Spatial Simulator, or the Immersive Web Emulator (Mixed-News). Additionally, the Horizon Store will prioritize hand-tracked titles for users of the new VR Glasses, and Meta expects more than 75 hand-gesture-compatible games to be available at launch (VR.org).
Ecosystem Integration and Launch Timeline
Developers targeting the hardware must account for specific physical characteristics of the display and optics. The Meta VR Glasses feature a 5K micro OLED display, though they offer a narrower field of view at 70 by 66 degrees compared to the 110 by 96 degree field of view found on the Quest 3 (VR.org).
These optical and hardware parameters mean that immersive experiences must be tailored carefully to the constraints of the device. Since the platform prioritizes hand gestures, voice input, and eye tracking over physical gamepads, creators participating in the competition are actively shaping the baseline user interface standards for the new storefront ecosystem (Road to VR).
Following the close of the developer contest on November 18, 2026, competition winners are scheduled to be announced on December 11, 2026 (Mixed-News). These winning submissions and other software entries will feed directly into the pipeline for the commercial hardware rollout.
The consumer release cycle remains on track for the hardware to ship in the spring of 2027 at the retail price of $1,299.99 (LBC). At that time, the Horizon Store will feature these optimized hand-tracked applications for the new user base (VR.org).
